Three ways to better focus

Doing one thing at a time is not one of my strengths! I’m a multi-passionate who bounces between my corporate job, my Meetup social group, and Intuitive North daily, with friend time, pets and self-care thrown in. It’s a challenge for me to sit down and focus on one thing.

I call it “bright shiny object” syndrome – if it catches my eye, I go after it.

Not the best way to run a business!!

So, I look out for tools that can help me stay on point. Some work, some absolutely do not (looking at you inbox zero, what was I thinking?)

Things that are working for me right now:

Three big rocks – having three priorities I am focused on each month. This acts as an anchor for me to keep going back to. Sometimes those big rocks may take longer than the month, but so long as I have them on my wall where I can see them, they’ll get done.

The High 5 Daily Journal – big Mel Robbins fan here, and her High 5 journal helps me to relax and get the crud out of my head that isn’t serving me. Then it helps me lay out my dreams with actions towards them – whether they are for that day, year, or blue sky – so they stay in the forefront of my thoughts.

Pomodoro technique – First, make sure you won’t be interrupted. Set a timer for 25 minutes, then focus on your task(s). After 25 minutes, take five. After four segments, or sooner if you complete what you needed to do, take a half hour break. People also call these sprints.

Bonus: Taking walks – If I’m overwhelmed by all the things going on, I know that stepping away from the desk and going for a walk is going to help my productivity. It helps to clear my mind of all the competing priorities and brings me back to center. For added serenity, you can also add in the Buddhist practice of massaging the earth with your feet, it helps to ground you and feels almost intentional – and kind of fun, like you’re doing something for the planet.
